EV Hybrid Service/Services

Preventive maintenance for hybrid cars

On a hybrid, changing the oil and filters doesn’t cover everything that wears out quietly. At a service we also check the hybrid-specific parts: battery cooling, the inverter coolant where there is one, brake fluid and brakes that get used too little. That way expensive problems don’t only show up when a warning light comes on.

Who hybrid maintenance is for

It makes sense if you plan to keep your hybrid for a long time, if you bought a car without a clear history, or if you want the regular service to include a check of the battery and cooling, before odd fuel consumption or a fan that never stops appears.

Services done as if it were a petrol car

The oil has been changed, but the battery cooling filter, brake fluid or inverter coolant appear nowhere on the record. On a hybrid, these parts matter just as much.

The battery fan runs more often than before

A cooling filter clogged with dust makes the battery run hotter. A service catches the problem before it affects the modules.

The rear brakes rust or drag

On hybrids, regenerative braking does almost all the work and the friction brakes are used rarely. The discs rust and the rear calipers can seize. Brake fluid ages anyway, even if the pads look new.

Years or many kilometres without a hybrid check

No warnings on the dashboard doesn’t mean the cooling, visible connectors or fluids are fine. A hybrid service puts them on the list.

Why a hybrid service, not just an oil change

A general garage changes what it sees on any car. A hybrid, though, has a cooling circuit for the battery, sometimes a separate circuit for the inverter, and brakes that work far less. Ignore them and you pay later in modules or calipers.

Battery cooling is part of the service

The filter and air ducts, or the coolant circuit on some models, keep the modules at the right temperature. We check them at the service rather than waiting for a fault code.

Fluids the standard checklist forgets

On Toyota hybrids, the inverter has its own cooling circuit, with a different coolant and interval from the engine. Brake fluid has its own interval too. We treat them as wear items, not optional extras.

We catch battery warning signs early

At the service we also look at how the high-voltage battery behaves and recommend a test if the readings call for it. It doesn’t replace a detailed test, but it catches the signs early.

How we work, step by step

We start from the service book and what your model requires, carry out the regular service plus the hybrid-specific checks, and tell you what we changed and what is worth keeping an eye on.

  1. 1. We look at the model and its history

You tell us the mileage, the date of the last service and whether you have noticed anything. From that we set the list of jobs for your car’s make and generation.

  2. 2. We read the codes and do a visual inspection

We read any active codes, look for leaks, and check the battery cooling filter where it can be reached and the condition of the visible wiring.

  3. 3. The regular service plus the hybrid side

We change the oil and filters, the brake fluid when due, the inverter coolant where the procedure requires it, and replace the battery cooling filter if it is clogged.

  4. 4. We check the brakes and the rest

We look at the pads, discs and calipers, especially the rear ones, which often seize on hybrids, then the tyres and the other items on the schedule, without padding the list.

  5. 5. Handover and what comes next

We tell you what we did, what is due at the next service and whether a separate battery test is worthwhile. The service is preventive, not a disguised repair.

What the service can include

The work depends on the model and the interval. On a typical hybrid, the service includes:

  • Engine oil and filters, to the manufacturer’s specification
  • Checking and, if needed, replacing the battery cooling filter
  • Brake fluid when due or after a moisture test
  • Inverter coolant, where the model has it
  • Reading codes from the hybrid systems
  • Visual inspection of wiring and accessible vulnerable areas
  • Checking the brakes: wear, rust and seized calipers
  • A handover sheet with intervals and recommendations

Which makes we service

We regularly service the most common hybrids. If your model has a special fluid procedure, we follow it; ask us beforehand if there is anything unusual.

What the service covers

The warranty covers the parts and labour of the service carried out, under the conditions on the handover sheet. It is not a warranty on the whole car.

For what we replaced

The filters, fluids and listed jobs are covered if a fault relates to the fitting or to a part we fitted.

It doesn’t replace a battery test

A preventive service isn’t a detailed module test. If the battery needs measuring, we recommend a separate test.

Clear intervals

We leave you in writing what is due at the next service. Wear between two visits depends on how the car is used.

Frequently asked questions about hybrid maintenance

How is it different from a service at a regular garage?+

We add the hybrid-specific items: high-voltage battery cooling, inverter coolant where there is one, brake fluid, the rear brakes that often seize, and a check of the hybrid system, not just the engine oil.

Do you also change the inverter coolant?+

Yes, on models with a separate inverter circuit, such as Toyota hybrids, at the manufacturer’s interval and following its procedure. We don’t invent jobs on cars that don’t have this fluid.

What about the hybrid transmission fluid?+

Toyota doesn’t include changing it in the standard service schedule, but at high mileage a change can make sense. We tell you what we recommend once we have seen the car and its history.

How long does a service take?+

It varies from case to case, depending on how many jobs are due. We tell you when you book.

Does the service include a battery test?+

No, a detailed battery test is a separate service. If we see signs at the service that justify it, we suggest it.

Can I come in just for the battery cooling filter?+

Yes. Many Toyota and Lexus owners come in just for that, after the fan has started running often. We tell you if anything else is worth checking on the same visit.
