Inverter repair for hybrid and electric cars
The inverter links the high-voltage battery to the electric motors. When it fails, the car goes into limp mode, loses power or lights up the hybrid system warning. We find the cause by measurement, at the inverter, its cooling and the connections, before suggesting a repair or a replacement.
When the inverter needs checking
It is worth coming in when the car loses power, goes into limp mode or shows power electronics faults, and the battery isn’t the only suspect. We start with diagnostics on the car and remove the inverter only when the measurements call for it.
Limp mode or a sudden loss of power
The car no longer accelerates normally or stays in limp mode. The cause can be the inverter, its cooling or a sensor; reading the codes and a load test show us which.
Hybrid system warning light and inverter faults
The codes stored by the inverter and the hybrid control unit are the starting point. We check whether the fault is electronic, cooling-related or a supply problem before replacing any part.
Coolant leaks or corrosion around the inverter
A clogged cooling circuit, leaks or corrosion can destroy power components that were fine. A visual inspection of the circuit matters as much as reading the codes.
Faults that only appear when hot or on long drives
Some inverters only fail once they warm up. We test the car in the workshop and on the road, watch the temperatures and see whether the fault is heat-related or permanent.
We measure before removing the inverter
The inverter is an expensive part and works together with the battery, motors and cooling. A fault code doesn’t tell you whether a power transistor, the cooling pump, a connector or the software is to blame. Without measurements you risk replacing the wrong part.
Cooling is often the real cause
On the second-generation Prius, the electric inverter cooling pump often seizes and the car shows code P0A93, meaning the inverter is overheating. We check the cooling circuit before treating the inverter as “dead”.
Battery and inverter are easily confused
Limp mode can come from weak battery modules, from the inverter or from both. Testing on the car shows where the power chain breaks.
Sometimes the fix is a software update
On the third-generation Prius built between 2009 and 2014, Toyota recalled cars for inverter software that could overheat the transistors and put the car into limp mode. We check whether your car has had the update.
How we work, step by step
We read the codes, measure under load, check the cooling, work on the inverter only when there is a reason and road-test the car after the job.
1. You tell us what is happening
When limp mode appears: when hot, after rain, under acceleration. From that we decide what to check first on your model.
2. We read the codes and look at the inverter
We read the codes stored by the inverter, the battery and related systems. We check the connectors, visible wiring and any signs of coolant or corrosion.
3. We test under load and check the cooling
We measure voltages, temperatures and behaviour under acceleration and regenerative braking. We check the inverter cooling circuit where it is accessible.
4. We fix the cause we found
We repair or replace the inverter, or fix the cooling or wiring problem, once the measurements show the cause. We don’t remove anything on a hunch.
5. We clear the codes, test and hand the car back
We clear the codes, road-test the car and explain what we measured, what we replaced and what limits remain.

What inverter work includes
The final quote comes after diagnosis, because every car has a different cause. As a rule, the check and the work include:
- Diagnosis of the hybrid system and the inverter
- Reading and interpreting power electronics fault codes
- Visual check of connectors, wiring and vulnerable areas
- Checking the inverter cooling circuit, where accessible
- Load test: acceleration, regenerative braking, temperatures
- Checking applicable recalls and software updates
- Fixing the confirmed cause: repair, replacement or cooling
- Clearing codes, a final road test and a written warranty
Which makes we check inverters for
We regularly work on the inverters of the hybrids and electric cars most common in Romania. If your model is not listed, ask us and we will tell you whether we can help.
What we often find
We will publish real, documented jobs one by one. Until then, here are situations we come across often:
Toyota Prius second generation
A seized inverter cooling pump
The car shows P0A93 and goes into limp mode, especially on long drives. The typical cause is the electric inverter cooling pump seizing. Caught in time, replacing the pump saves the inverter.
Hybrids and electric cars
Reduced power although the battery looks fine
The battery looks fine on a code read, but the power electronics or connections give way under load. We separate the inverter from the battery based on measured values, not displayed ones.
What the work covers and what it doesn’t
The warranty covers the work done on the inverter or the confirmed cause, under the conditions on the handover sheet. It is not a warranty on all the car’s electronics.
A warranty on what we repaired
You get in writing what we replaced or repaired, what we measured and for how long we guarantee the work.
We tell you the limits up front
If the fault only appears now and then, is cooling-related or involves parts that can’t be repaired, we tell you from the start. We don’t give firm verdicts where we have no access.
If the problem is elsewhere
If the battery, wiring or on-board charger is to blame, we tell you and suggest the right step. We don’t replace the inverter on a hunch.
Frequently asked questions about inverter repair
What does inverter repair actually involve?+
It means diagnosing the power electronics, checking the cooling and connections, then repairing or replacing only what we have confirmed as faulty. It is not just clearing codes.
Could the battery be at fault rather than the inverter?+
Yes. Limp mode and loss of power also happen when battery modules are weak. That is why we test on the car and separate the causes before removing anything.
Has my car been part of an inverter recall?+
Possibly. Toyota, for example, recalled the third-generation Prius for inverter software. We check whether the updates have been done; if your car has an open recall, we tell you to have it fixed free of charge at a dealer.
How long does it take?+
It varies from case to case, for both diagnosis and repair: it depends on the fault, the part and the dismantling. We give you an estimate after the measurements.
Is the inverter repaired or replaced?+
It depends on the fault. Sometimes the problem is the cooling, a connector or a component we can reach; other times the unit can no longer be repaired. We tell you after the measurements.
Do I need to bring the car on a tow truck?+
If it can no longer be driven safely or stays stuck in limp mode, yes. If it still drives normally, you can drive it in; we decide together when you book.

Find out whether the problem is the inverter
Book a diagnostic check. We tell you whether the problem is the inverter, its cooling or something else, before you replace the wrong part.
