Hybrid car misconceptions, and what they mean for repairs

Hybrids have been on Romanian roads for more than 20 years, but many ideas about them date back to the first Prius. Some of them can cost you money, so they are worth clearing up.

“The hybrid battery has to be replaced after a few years”

A hybrid’s battery is designed to last a long time. Many reach 200,000–300,000 km in good condition, especially if the cooling has been maintained. Age and heat matter more than mileage. If you want to know exactly how yours is doing, a battery test shows the condition of each module.

“If the battery fails, the whole thing gets replaced”

Not necessarily. A hybrid battery is made up of modules, and usually a few of them fail first. If the rest are in good condition, only the weak modules can be replaced and the battery rebalanced. Sometimes a full replacement is the right call, for example when every module is worn. See hybrid battery repair and hybrid battery replacement.

“Hybrids plug in”

Only plug-in hybrids do. A full hybrid, such as a Toyota Corolla, C-HR or RAV4 Hybrid, charges its battery itself, from the engine and from braking. The differences are in the types of hybrid and electric cars.

“A hybrid is economical everywhere”

The biggest advantage shows in town, where the car often runs on electricity and recovers energy under braking. On the motorway, at constant speed, consumption gets close to that of a regular petrol car. If a hybrid suddenly uses more fuel than usual, it is often a sign that the hybrid battery is weakening.

“A hybrid doesn’t need servicing”

It needs the servicing of a petrol engine, plus a check of the hybrid system: the battery, its filter and fan, the inverter cooling. See hybrid servicing.

“Any workshop can work on a hybrid”

On the mechanical side, yes. The high-voltage system, though, needs training, insulated tools and diagnostic equipment. We wrote about it in where to service a hybrid.

“A hybrid system fault means the battery”

Not always. The same warning light can come on because of the inverter, a cooling pump, a sensor or the 12 V battery. That is why we test before replacing anything. See hybrid diagnostics.
