Where to service a hybrid or electric car

Not every workshop can work on a hybrid or electric car. The high-voltage system calls for training, insulated tools and diagnostic equipment, and mistakes can be dangerous and expensive.

The main dealer

It has direct access to the manufacturer’s information and updates, and it is the only option for warranty work and recalls. The drawback is that for expensive components the standard fix is often replacing the whole assembly, even when only part of it is faulty.

The specialist independent

A workshop that specialises in hybrids and EVs can diagnose down to component level and repair where a dealer would replace. For example, on a hybrid battery only the weak modules can be replaced, and on an inverter, only the faulty component.

How to spot a properly equipped workshop

  • Staff trained for high voltage, with protective equipment and insulated tools.
  • Diagnostic equipment that reads the battery, inverter and charging system, not just the engine.
  • Testing before repair: it measures rather than guessing from a fault code.
  • Clear explanations: it shows you what it found and tells you honestly whether the repair is worth it.
  • A written warranty for the work done.

When to choose which

  • The car is under warranty and the fault is covered: the dealer.
  • A recall: the dealer.
  • The car is out of warranty, or you have been quoted for replacing an expensive component: get a specialist’s opinion too.
  • Routine servicing: either, as long as they know how to work on the hybrid or electric system.
